Industry veteran steps out on fundraising challenge
Timeshare industry veteran Patrick O’Doherty recently completed the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage to raise funds for the Macmillan Caring Locally charity.
O’Doherty, a partner at RCI-affiliated resort, Paradise Kings Club Paphos, successfully walked the 800 kilometres in memory of his good friend John Farnhill who passed away last year.
Starting at St Jean Pied de Port in south-west France on 12 May, the route immediately heads up and over the Pyrenees mountains, across Northern Spain to Galicia and the target destination of Santiago de Compostella where Patrick arrived on 23 June.
“John Farnhill was a great friend who dedicated much of his life to fundraising. Working with several teams, he raised over £20 million for charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support, The Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Sargent the UK’s leading cancer charity for young people,” said O’Doherty.
“While walking the Camino, challenging as it was, I was spurred on by the knowledge that John was still raising funds one year after his passing. So far we have raised over £3,000 for which I would like to thank family, friends, fellow walkers and industry colleagues.”
During the trek, O’Doherty met people from a range of far-reaching countries including Australia, New Zealand, USA, Hawaii, South Korea and Holland.
“The experience was more than worthwhile to take six weeks out of my normal routine life,” he added.
“Will it change me? I don’t know but I will certainly never forget it. It was wonderful when my two sons, Jamie and Andy took the time to meet me at the end of the trek.”
